What is Rank 5 and what does it add to a Survivor?

The fifth rank exists because 1.0 needed room for more synergies. The developer published the node counts, not the node list.

Quick Answer

Version 1.0 introduces a fifth rank on every Survivor's skill tree. The developer states that each Survivor gains two new synergy nodes, two passive improvement nodes, and one passive node whose bonus applies to the whole team while that Survivor is present. In the same announcement, cross-Survivor synergies rise to four per character: three tied to abilities, and a fourth that works independently of them.

Steps

  1. Update the game to 1.0 or later. The fifth rank arrives with the full release, so it does not exist in 0.9 or any earlier build.
  2. Open the skill tree for the Survivor you want to develop.
  3. Read the fifth rank as three groups: two synergy nodes, two passive improvement nodes, and one team-wide passive.

Requirements / Limits

  • The team-wide passive is conditional. The developer's wording is that the bonus applies to the whole team provided that Survivor is present.
  • Cross-Survivor synergies are four per character in 1.0. Three are tied to abilities; the fourth is stated to work independently of them.
  • Ranks are reached through play, not bought at a menu. A fix line in the same 1.0 changelog reads: “Cash & Specialization gains should now display correctly on the run's endscreen when the max rank is reached within the same run.” That is the developer describing the max rank as something a player reaches inside a single run.
  • That the max rank is the fifth is an inference, and a narrow one: the same announcement introduces the fifth rank to the tree. The changelog never writes “max rank = 5”.
  • The developer explains why the rank exists — more space was needed for the expansion — but publishes no kill count, level number or cost for reaching it.
  • No per-Survivor list of the new nodes has been published. What is on the record is the count and the category of each group.

Common Mistakes

  • Following a pre-1.0 build guide that was written before the fifth rank existed, and assuming the tree ends where that guide ends.
  • Expecting the team-wide passive to keep paying out when that Survivor is not in the squad. The developer ties it to the Survivor being present.
  • Assuming all four cross-Survivor synergies are ability-based. The fourth is explicitly not.
  • Treating a community node list as the developer's list. The developer has published counts, not names.
  • Quoting the numbers 5,000 and 20,000 as the 1.0 rank thresholds. They come from a wiki page last revised in December 2025, whose own rank ladder stops at three.

What Is Verified

Everything above the line comes from one paragraph of the 1.0 announcement. The question that paragraph does not answer — how a Survivor actually gets to the fifth rank — was re-checked on 24 August 2026 against sources already held for other pages, and it moved. What follows is what moved, and how far.

The strongest piece is first-party and had been sitting in the changelog the whole time, filed under bug fixes rather than under progression. The developer writes that “Cash & Specialization gains should now display correctly on the run's endscreen when the max rank is reached within the same run.” A fix for a display bug is still the developer describing the system it mis-displayed: in 1.0 the max rank is something a player reaches during a run, and it is normal enough to reach it mid-run that the end-screen had to be fixed for that case. Ranks are therefore earned by playing, not chosen at a menu — which answers the shape of this page's open question even though it answers no number.

One 1.0-era recording shows this happening. In an 89-minute Infinite run on a 1.0 preview build, the player breaks off mid-fight to say “Third rank in SWAT. I just unlocked that.” It is a machine caption of an offhand remark, so it is worth only what it is: independent first-hand confirmation that a Survivor rank unlocks partway through a run in 1.0. It names no condition and no count.

The only source that has ever stated a threshold is the game's official community wiki, and it is not a 1.0 source. Its Survivors page says ranks are earned by getting kills with that Survivor as the team leader, that everyone starts at rank 1, that rank 2 arrives after 5,000 such kills and rank 3 after a further 20,000, and that each rank doubles that Survivor's leader perk while opening additional powerups. That page was last revised on 10 December 2025, eight months before 1.0 shipped. The numbers are recorded here as history and are not stated as current.

The same page is unusually good at proving its own datedness, which is why the caution is not boilerplate. Its rank ladder stops at three, two short of the fifth rank 1.0 introduced. Its prose says there are seven playable Survivors while the page itself lists eight, and the developer's 1.0 changelog names Ranger as the ninth. The wiki's changelog page runs out at version 0.5.1a. A page that far behind can describe how ranking up used to work; it cannot state what rank 4 or rank 5 costs today, and no checked source does.
