What does the Luck stat actually do?

The in-game tooltip names two effects. A third effect is claimed by one source only, and this page keeps them apart.

Quick Answer

The in-game Luck tooltip, read aloud in a 1.0 recording, states two effects: it increases the amount of pickup-type enemy drops, and it increases the rarity of Military Training cards. A release-day explainer describes the same two effects and adds a third — that Luck also contributes to critical and dodge in ways the normal Survivor stat display does not fully show. Only the first two are confirmed by more than one source. Luck is also a stat other things grant: the Ranger's skill tree carries a node that raises the whole team's Luck by 10 while she is present.

Steps

  1. Open the stat entry in-run rather than guessing from the name. The tooltip is the only first-party text on Luck found in this sweep, and it is short.
  2. Read the two effects it names: it increases the amount of pickup-type enemy drops, and it increases the rarity of Military Training cards.
  3. Judge Luck by what the run offers you, not by a damage number. Neither checked source describes Luck raising damage directly.
  4. Account for Luck you did not pick. The Ranger's 1.0 skill tree carries a node whose text is that while she is on the team, Luck is increased by 10.

Requirements / Limits

  • The two tooltip effects are the only ones confirmed by more than one source. A release-day explainer describes the same two independently, in different words.
  • The claim that Luck also feeds critical and dodge in ways the stat display does not show comes from that explainer alone. It is repeated here as a single report, not as an established rule.
  • No per-point magnitude is published for any Luck effect. The only number on record is the Ranger node's flat +10 to the team.
  • The player who read the tooltip opened it because he was guessing that Luck increased power-ups. The tooltip did not use that word, and the guess is recorded so the reason he checked is on the record. It is worth noting that his guess is close to how the wiki defined Luck in January 2024 — “increases the odds of zombies dropping powerups on death” — which is the same effect the 1.0 tooltip calls pickup-type enemy drops, in different words.
  • That January 2024 wiki definition is the oldest first-party-adjacent statement on Luck found in any sweep, and it names one effect only. It does not mention Military Training card rarity, and it does not mention critical or dodge. It is too old to disprove anything about 1.0, and it is not used that way here; it is recorded because it shows the drops effect is the long-standing core of the stat and the other two claims are later additions to the record.

Common Mistakes

  • Reading Luck as random stuff gets better and stacking it for a single visible payoff. Both sources describe several small effects rather than one large one.
  • Expecting the Survivor stat display to account for everything Luck does. One source says explicitly that it does not; that claim is single-source and is listed as an open question below.
  • Assuming Luck only comes from stat picks. The Ranger grants team Luck from her tree, and at least one badge and one Survivor ability interact with Military Training rarity separately.
  • Treating Military Training rarity as cosmetic. Rarity governs what the card offers, which is the second half of what Luck buys you.
